Vegan Milks 101: Which should you choose?

If you have found this blog post, you were perhaps already browsing through our amazing Plant Based Milk section of TheVeganKind Supermarket, or searching something like ‘Best Vegan Milk’ on the internet. Either way, we hope to offer some advice on the best types of non-dairy milk for you to try.
Firstly, let’s start with a little table to show you the nutritional content you can expect from Plant Based Milks. Some of them have the same calcium than cows milk (120mg per 100ml), some of them have more omega 3 than a tuna fish (but of course, that ain’t food), and some of them are a great vegan protein source. But the most important part about all of these vegan milks is that they are cruelty free.
Plant Based Milk – Nutritional Content
Type of Vegan Milk | Protein (per 100ml) | Calcium (per 100ml) | Anything else? |
1.0g | 120mg (15% RDA) | B12 (15% RDA)
4.1g | - | Makes amazing latte
Good Hemp Milk | 0.3g | - | Very high Omega 3 |
0.5g | 120mg (15% RDA) | Nice nutty flavour
KOKO Coconut Milk | 0.2g | 120mg (15% RDA) | B12 (15% RDA) |
And we haven’t even mentioned Rice Milk, Pea Milk, Cashew Milk, Hazelnut Milk, Macademia Nut Milk or Pea Milk! Wow – that is a whole lot of vegan milks to try.
Best Non-Dairy Milk For Coffee?
We personally find that ALL vegan milks are great for coffee – they all just taste different and therefore add a different flavour. So you should definitely try them all out and see which one suits you the best. You may end up finding that you enjoy the way it tastes because of the added benefit the plant based milk brings – for example, cows milk has no Omega 3 in it at all, so you may well enjoy the different flavour Hemp Milk offers, knowing you are getting a vegan Omega 3 intake. BUT, if you are reading this as you really want a direct replacement for cows milk in your coffee – then our personal favourite is the world famous Oatly. It is creamy, and offers only a subtle flavour, while giving the same overall colour to your coffee.
Best Non-Dairy Milk For Tea
This is a biggie for loads of people when they go vegan. “How will I cope without milk in my Tea”. Well we have some great news – you will cope just fine, because we are about to tell you our favourite. Again, same as coffee, we feel that all vegan milks have their place in tea, and just like everything in life it is trial and error to find the one that suits your palette. Soya milk can and often does curdle in tea – so be aware of that – but don’t let it put you off! Yes, it curdles, but it is probably the most commonly used vegan milk in tea – it just doesn’t look particularly great. But for us, the best plant based milk for tea has to be none other than the wildly popular Alpro Soya Professional! Which incidentally has a Barista version which is fantastic for frothing up for use in coffee.
Conclusion
So, there you have it. Cows milk is for baby cows – and for us humans, we have a quite frankly HUGE choice when it comes to choosing the best plant based milk to suit our tastebuds.
