Popular pie brand Pukka has added two vegan options to its range of vegan pies.
Vegan Chicken & Mushroom and Vegan Minced Steak & Onion are made with plant-based meat alternatives. Both the chicken and steak-style pieces are made with soy protein.
The pies come with a vegan label from The Vegetarian Society, and they are priced at £1.89 for 213g packaging. The products will launch nationwide on 16 September.
The company did not reveal which supplier it collaborated with to source its plant-based meat replacements.
The brand’s head of marketing Rachel Cranston said the new products came as “part of an ongoing investment to help put more pies on more plates more often.” And added that the pies did not “compromise on taste”.
According to IGD data, the number of vegans in the UK has risen 305% in the past year. “This demonstrates there’s a real opportunity to offer shoppers vegan alternatives to two of our most popular pie recipes,” Cranston said.
Pukka changed its packaging earlier this year. The company ditched plastic windows from its pie boxes in a bid to become more sustainable.
