One Planet Pizza Launches Vegan Pizza Drone Delivery

by Agi Kaja

Vegan pizza pioneer, One Planet Pizza, is taking its passion for pizza to the skies by launching a new drone delivery service. The initiative will enable hungry consumers to satisfy their pizza cravings by delivering pizza in 60 minutes, once orders are placed through the brand’s DroneDelivery app.

Initially launching in selected locations in London and Norfolk on 2nd April 2021, the Delivery By Drone (DBD) service is set for nationwide roll-out in autumn 2021. Currently 20 drones are available for launch from the One Planet Pizza headquarters in Hethersett, Norfolk, and additional bases are now being sought in England, Scotland and Wales to extend the delivery radius.

Trials of the DBD service have already taken place to test locations throughout London and Norfolk. A promotional campaign of pizza sampling will include influencer Hench Herbivore.

Each drone is powered entirely by green electricity, making it 100% carbon neutral, meaning consumers can reduce their impact on the environment not just by enjoying plant-based food, but by avoiding delivery by vehicle too. Currently the project is poised to save 120 metric tons of carbon emissions per year, and over time, it is hoped that upgrades will allow the drones to carry a larger weight, further reducing the need for delivery by van and hence the amount of carbon produced.

Hench Herbivore says: “Sometimes I get a craving for plant-based pizza – but I don’t want to wait for it to be delivered a few days later. One Planet Pizza’s new DroneDelivery app means I can get it on demand, when I want it. Nothing will get in the way of me satisfying my hunger for pizza, so I’m glad the team at One Planet Pizza are going to extreme lengths by using cutting-edge technology to provide this speedy and environmentally-friendly delivery.”

Accelerated by the need for contact-free delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the ongoing need to reduce carbon emissions, the DBD project has been kept under wraps for months, as the One Planet Pizza team worked on sourcing high-speed drones which could carry the weight of up to five pizzas and obtaining correct licensing for the deliveries.

Commenting on the deliveries, Co-Founder of One Planet Pizza, Joe Hill, said: “One Planet Pizza isn’t just about creating epic pizza, it’s about delivering change for the planet. Through our significant investment in drone technology, we’re set to save more than a hundred metric tons of carbon a year – which is a priceless achievement. While we are one of the first companies to go to market with drone delivery, we certainly don’t expect to be the last. Rather, we encourage other direct-to-consumer food companies to explore this new way of reaching consumers, especially those in the plant-based sector where environmental concerns are key.”

To take advantage of the service, pizza lovers should download the One Planet Pizza DroneDelivery app from Google Play or the Apple App store from 2nd April. They can choose from a select range of pizzas – including The Spicy Mexicana® Melt, Tofurky Chick’n & Sweetcorn, and the Meatless Farm Cheezeburger. They will then make payment, and then place their phone in the location from where they are able to take deliveries. This can include a back garden, doorstep or open window. Delivery is expected to take no longer than 60 minutes, and ten minutes before the drone is due to arrive, the phone will alert the user of this by beeping and advising them to stand back from their mobile, where GPS data will be used to guide the drone towards the device, which it will use as its landing spot. Delivery will cost £6.99, with costs expected to reduce over time.
